Virginia Beach Whales starter Manuel Ruíz was in fine form against the Belvedere Park Rawhides at Virginia Beach Grounds, leading his team to a 5-3 win. In 6.1 innings, Ruíz surrendered 2 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. Wu-shiun Lao, credited with the save, is now 11 for 15 in save opportunities.
The Whales got a big at-bat from shortstop Scott French. For the game, French went 1 for 4, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run single. His 55th hit of the season gave Virginia Beach a 3-1 lead.
"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Ruíz. "Successful pitchers do it."
