Yakima Beats Chesapeake, 8-2

The Yakima Hops knocked off the Chesapeake Continentals, 8-2, at Hops Park. Jim McMahon, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Yakima won. The third baseman was 3-5 with 2 doubles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Steve Barnett, the winner, improved to 6-0. He held the Continentals to 2 earned runs on 3 hits over 5.2 innings, while striking out 2 and walking 4. Marcos Salinas was credited with the save for Yakima, his 4th of the season.
The Continentals had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hops going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old first baseman Marcos Avilés came to the plate. Avilés hit a 2-run single on a 2-1 fastball from Chesapeake hurler Brian Gardner. It was Avilés's 17th hit of the year.
"I like winning," Avilés told the Yakima Bulletin. "I may joke around, but when it comes down to it, winning is the most important thing."
The Hops saw their record improve to 55-30.
