The Chesapeake Continentals picked up a win at Farmers Field, knocking off the Lancaster Farmers, 5-2. Starting pitcher Paul Vereen played a key role in the triumph. Vereen went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 2-1. Dou-guan Shao picked up the save for Chesapeake, his 9th of the year.
Chesapeake used the timely hitting of Adam Smith to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Continentals on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Paul was throwing free and easy," said Chesapeake manager Allen Evans.
The Continentals now own a record of 15-37.
