Ladue Rams manager Henry Henderson knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 20-year-old right-hander John Sparks silenced the host Long Island Ducks at Ducks Park today. The Rams shut out the Ducks by a final score of 4-0, to give the Rams a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-5 PL R Championchip.

Sparks, a native of McHenry, Illinois, was dealing all game. He kept Long Island hitters off-balance, while giving the Rams 7 quality innings. Sparks threw 74 pitches, allowing 3 hits and striking out 6.

"John was pounding the zone," said Ladue manager Henry Henderson.
