BC Score Late, Top Smokies, 3-1
|
The Tennessee Smokies got a superb performance from pitcher Denie Coppens. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Put-In-Bay. The BC won the game, 3-1. In spite of the loss, Coppens was named the player of the game. He threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball. The win was Fernando Colón's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Denie Coppens took the loss for Tennessee. Put-In-Bay is now 38-46. Tennessee is 34-50.
Put-In-Bay used the timely hitting of Reginald Gibson to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the BC on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Winning is the only thing that really matters," Gibson told the Put-In-Bay Daily News. "If you can win without even breaking a sweat, more power to you."
