It was a good time at Virginia Beach Grounds, where fans came to watch the Durham Rapiers and Virginia Beach Whales get after it.

Whales first baseman Ron Lawrence put his stamp on his team's 16-3 win over the Durham Rapiers. Lawrence went 3-4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 7 runs and scored twice for Virginia Beach in the contest. Earning his 1st save for Virginia Beach was Josh Terry.

Ricardo Cardona had a big run-scoring single for the Whales in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Virginia Beach leading 4-3 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Chet Gustafson and stroked the single to center. It was his 14th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Whales ahead, 5-3.

In comments to the Virginia Beach Citizen, Cardona admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."

The Whales are off to a tough start, getting just their 8th win in 20 games.
