Dirty Reds Edge Lakers, 3-2
|
In a low-scoring affair between the San Mateo Dirty Reds and the Echo Park Lakers, pitcher Nelson Jaramillo was the difference between victory and defeat. The San Mateo right-hander earned player of the game honors in the 3-2 Dirty Reds win. San Mateo reliever Mal Houser got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Júlio Rodríguez was tagged with the loss. Picking up the save was Matt Digby, his 3rd.
The Lakers had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Dirty Reds going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 31-year old left fielder António Mendoza came to the plate. Mendoza hit a run-scoring single on a full count changeup from Echo Park hurler Luis Díaz. It was Mendoza's 11th hit of the year.
"We were in it," said Echo Park manager Jordan Calhoun. "We just didn't score enough runs."
With their winning streak at 5, the Dirty Reds have raced to a strong start this season.
