Game was big. So was Eric Matson.

The Boston starter rose to the occasion at Magnolia Park today, earning player of the game honors after leading the Patriots to a crucial 7-3 victory over the Mississippi Mockingbirds. Matson threw 8 innings of 5-hit ball as the Patriots won on the road to seize a - lead in the best-of- Round 1.

Matson was in the zone all game. He frustrated Mississippi hitters while giving the Patriots 8.1 innings of quality work. Matson threw 96 pitches, allowing 5 hits and getting 9 punchouts.
