Noe Toepfer knew he couldn't win the series for the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids. Down -0, it would take a lot more than one start. The best he could do, he figured, was prevent a sweep and give the Atlantica faithful a good time. Check and check.

The Northern Virginia left-hander threw a complete game shutout against the red-hot Houston 1837 BBC to get the Rainbow Mermaids on the board in the series, striking out 5 along the way. The Rainbow Mermaids will be looking to keep the momentum the next time the teams meet. With the 2-0 win, Northern Virginia now trails - in the best-of- series.

Toepfer was in the zone all game. He frustrated Houston hitters while giving the Rainbow Mermaids 9 innings of quality work. Toepfer threw 94 pitches, allowing 2 hits and getting 5 punchouts.

"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Toepfer told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
