Battery Win, Hope to Turn Around Slow Start
|
The Charleston Battery eked out a 4-3 win versus the Toledo Stingers at Charleston Armory. Nobody did more than right fielder Jasper Morrison, who captured player of the game honors. Miguel Angel Martínez, who went 5 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 3 runs on 5 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 6. His record now stands at 1-0. Hiroaki Kouda earned the save, his 2nd, for the Battery.
The Battery got a big at-bat from third baseman Fernando Rivera. For the game, Rivera went 2 for 4 with 2 singles. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 5th hit of the season gave Charleston a 4-3 lead.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Charleston manager Matt Hunt. "It's usually not just one thing."
Losses have been few and far between for the Stingers, who are now 5-1.
