San Diego Clippers manager Dexter Shannon knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 20-year-old left-hander Jeff McDermott silenced the host Ogallala Octopi at Nebraska Aquarium today. The Clippers shut out the Octopi by a final score of 11-0, to give the Clippers a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 PL R Championchip.

McDermott was in the zone all game. He frustrated Ogallala hitters while giving the Clippers 9 innings of quality work. McDermott threw 124 pitches, allowing 4 hits and getting 10 punchouts.

"It feels good to get this one," McDermott told the San Diego Today.

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Nebraska Aquarium. Slated to start are Justin Clapham for San Diego and Pjotr de Moor for Ogallala.
