Staten Island left-hander Artur Corteso made an effective start against the Newcastle Mermen at Newcastle Stadium, leading his team to a 3-2 win. Julius Spry got credit for the save for Staten Island. It was his 7th of the year. The Mermen, at 10-26, have lost 5 in a row.
Chris Piña aided the Staten Island cause with a run-scoring double in the top of the third. For the game, the third baseman went 1-2 with a double and a walk, while adding 2 RBI.
"It was a solid team effort," said Piña after the game.
