Pizza Rats Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Mermen
|
The Staten Island Pizza Rats beat the Newcastle Mermen, 7-4, at Newcastle Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of right fielder Wilson Sabadodíaz, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3 for 3 with a triple, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times. Julius Spry finished the game for Staten Island and earned his 5th save. Staten Island is now 10-24, Newcastle 10-24.
Carlos Sánchez had the most critical at-bat for Staten Island. With no one in the top of the ninth inning, Sánchez hit a 2-2 changeup from Ron Harris for a solo home run. It put Staten Island in front, 5-4.
"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Sánchez.
