Asheville got a terrific performance from pitcher Ernesto López, but it wasn't enough to beat the Ottawa Nationals. Ottawa won the Nationals Park contest, 5-3. López was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 6 innings of 5-hit ball. Dong Zhào picked up the save for Ottawa, his 2nd of the year. Ottawa is off to a sluggish start, getting just their 3rd win in 12 games.
Had José Bumgarnor not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Bumgarnor hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-3, in favor of the Nationals.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Ottawa manager John Hill. "It's usually not just one thing."
