Their bats were silent and Brinkley had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Belugas struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 24-year-old starter Grover Lowdermilk. The right-hander quieted the Port Royal Disaster at Belugas Ballpark to help Brinkley take the 2-1 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 3L AAA Championship.

Lowdermilk, a native of Vincennes, Indiana, was dealing all game. He kept Port Royal hitters off-balance, while giving the Belugas 7.2 quality innings. Lowdermilk threw 102 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 5.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Lowdermilk told the Brinkley Times.

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow in Brinkley. Slated to start are Scott Morrison for the Port Royal Disaster and Aurelio López for the the Brinkley Belugas.
