Mermen Come Up Short at Moose Jaw

The Canucks faced a stiff challenge from Newcastle pitcher Wilson Valenzuela, but persevered to claim a win at Foresters Stadium. The final score was 2-1. Valenzuela went 7.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Leevi Kangro was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 1 run on 9 hits, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Steve de Regt converted his 10th save in 13 tries.
In the bottom of the 6th, designated hitter Yaakov Shmerkin gave Moose Jaw the lead when he hit a 2-run double. The Canucks had been trailing 1-0, but the two-out double off Newcastle pitcher Wilson Valenzuela changed that -- and Moose Jaw went on to win.
