Late Rally by Mermen Secures Win
The Staten Island Pizza Rats extended their losing streak with a loss to the Newcastle Mermen.

The Newcastle Mermen scored a 4-3 win versus the Staten Island Pizza Rats at Ballpark of Califon. Newcastle shortstop Katsuyuki Nakamura nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. Geoff Pruitt picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Juan Sánchez was tagged with the loss.

Tom Matthews swatted a 2-run home run for Newcastle in the top of the ninth. The third baseman went 2 for 4 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and batted in 2.

Matthews told a Newcastle Observer reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

Staten Island now has a 8-game losing streak.
