The Newcastle Mermen defeated the Gibtown Elephants, 1-0, in USSL Rookie action at Newcastle Stadium, with Newcastle pitcher Wilson Valenzuela named player of the game. The winning pitcher was Valenzuela, now 6-3. He tossed 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 9. Doug Lane, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 7th save.

The Mermen got a big at-bat from center fielder Jorge Castillo. For the game, Castillo was 1 for 4. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 52nd hit of the season gave Newcastle a 1-0 lead.

"Baseball is about momentum," said Valenzuela, "and we feel we've got it in our favor after that win."

The Mermen now own a record of 28-36.
