Mermen Bridle Uruguayans, 3-1
|
Fans at Ballpark of Albuquerque were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Germantown Uruguayans take on the Newcastle Mermen.
The Newcastle Mermen picked up a win at Ballpark of Albuquerque, knocking off the Germantown Uruguayans, 3-1. Starting pitcher Valentin Calhamar, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. Calhamar, now 4-4, was the winner. In 8.1 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 2, walking 2, and allowing 1 earned run.
Newcastle first baseman John Batman helped the Mermen go up, 1-0, in the top of the fourth inning. With the game tied, Batman hit a run-scoring single off Germantown pitcher Robert Karabanov.
"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Mermen manager Harris Bailey, "I like our chances."
Today's win puts Newcastle at 20-24, while Germantown falls to 30-14.
