River Rats Sneak Past Chiefs, 2-1
|
Fans who came to Columbia Stadium watched the Columbia River Rats and the Connetquot Chiefs fight to the finish.
Connetquot got a terrific performance from pitcher Dan Bond, but it wasn't enough to beat the Columbia River Rats. Columbia won the Columbia Stadium contest, 2-1. Bond was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 2-hit ball. Stewart Cartwright picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Frank Porter was tagged with the loss. Kit Scheetz picked up the save, his 18th.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder King Rutledge came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Connetquot pitcher Frank Porter, he hit a 0-1 curveball for a run-scoring double. It was a game-changer, putting Columbia on top, 2-1.
Rutledge said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
Columbia is now 26-18, Connetquot 27-17.
