Late Rally by River Rats Secures Win
|
The Nebraska Plainsmen got a superb performance from pitcher Woodrow Pelot, but the Columbia River Rats still won the game, 4-3. Pelot was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 8 innings of 7-hit ball. The win was credited to Kit Scheetz in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Morton Steele took the loss. The River Rats have an impressive 23-14 record.
The River Rats were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when catcher Marcos Martínez turned a first pitch sinker from Morton Steele into a 2-run double. The walk-off double sent a roar through the crowd and gave Columbia a thrilling 4-3 win.
"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" Martínez told the Columbia Gazette. "You win just by scoring more runs."
