Airmen Trip Hawks in Extras
|
Highwood got a terrific performance from pitcher Manuel Ruíz, but it wasn't enough to beat the Alameda Airmen. Alameda won the Hawks Field contest, 4-1. Ruíz was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball. Reliever Yong-chul Kim picked up the win. His record improves to 2-0. Scott Martin took the loss. The 8th-place Hawks have dropped 5 straight games.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Gang Jing came to bat in the top of the 20th. Facing Highwood pitcher Scott Martin, he hit a 2-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Alameda on top, 2-1.
"It was just a matter of executing," said Alameda manager Willie Mitchell.
