Seawolves Score Late, Stun Atoms, 11-8
|
Despite a fine performance by shortstop Raúl Francisco, the Bethesda Atoms suffered a 11-8 loss to the Long Island Seawolves. Francisco was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Long Island reliever Fernando Júlio picked up the win to move to 1-0. Vincent O'Higgin suffered the loss. It was the 16th win in 19 games this year for the defending champion Seawolves, who are picking up where they left off.
Long Island used the timely hitting of Júlio Flores to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Seawolves on top, 9-8. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"If we play well, we'll win our share of games," said Flores. "The only team that can beat us is us."
