Matena Earns SR's Best Pitcher Honor Sunday, August 1st, 2032 Any time a rookie makes a splash on the scene, it's got to be great for his career potential. Just ask Sjelle Matena, who put together a stellar month out of the pen. The Winter Haven Sun Sox closer, 21, kept the opposition off balance all month as he held them to a .116 average and walked away with the USSL Rookie Pitcher of the Month award for July. Matena posted a 5-0 mark and a 0.46 ERA in 10 relief appearances. In 19.2 innings, he had 1 save, 28 strikeouts, and 4 walks. This season Matena has notched 2 saves with 80 strikeouts and 10 walks in 59 innings while registering a 2.14 ERA and a 6-2 won-lost record. |
