Portland Evergreens starter Giovanni Mireles was in fine form against the Atlanta Smoke at Smoke Ballpark, leading his team to a 8-1 win. Mireles, the winner, moves to 13-4. He threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up 2 walks. The Smoke, now 44-63, have lost 7 straight.
The Evergreens got a big at-bat from center fielder Chris Payling. For the game, Payling went 1-5, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the seventh, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run single. His 148th hit of the season gave Portland a 3-1 lead.
