Springfield starter Tod Whipple pitched effectively against the Marquette Miners at Marquette Stadium. The left-hander led his team to a 6-5 win. Whipple got the win, improving to 1-4. He allowed 4 hits and walked 3 over 5 innings. Whipple allowed 2 earned runs. Springfield is now 36-42, Marquette 39-39.
The Shooters got a lift from third baseman Miguel Elías who had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning off Devin Gaines. It was his 35th RBI of the season and put Springfield in front, 1-0.
"I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone," Whipple said.
