Asheville right-hander David Gómez made an effective start against the Richland Rails at Rails Ballpark, leading his team to a 6-2 win. Gómez, now 4-2, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 4, walking 4, and allowing 2 earned runs. The 4th-place Highlanders have won 5 straight.

Asheville grabbed control in the top of the sixth. With two out and a runner on 1st, Jeffery Simpson delivered a run-scoring double, to make it 3-2 in favor of the Highlanders.

In comments to the Asheville Observer, Gómez admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
