Miners Take Down Highlanders, 6-1
|
It was a good time at Marquette Stadium, where fans came to watch the Asheville Highlanders and Marquette Miners get after it.
Melvin Tiburcio never let the Highlanders get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his splitter, to pitch the Miners to a 6-1 win. Tiburcio, now 7-2, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 6, walking 3, and allowing 1 earned run. Getting the save was Félix Santiago, his 8th.
Asko Riikonen hit a 2-run double off Albert Sierra in the bottom of the first, which put the Miners in front, 2-0. In addition to the double, Riikonen had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.
"Melvin was pounding the zone," said Marquette manager Juan Sánchez.
Marquette is now 20-21.
