Miners Solve Highlanders, 5-3
|
Marquette Miners starter Melvin Tiburcio pitched a strong game against the Asheville Highlanders at Marquette Stadium, leading the Miners to a 5-3 win. Tiburcio, now 1-0, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs. Félix Santiago earned the save for Marquette, his 2nd of the year.
The Miners got a big at-bat from right fielder Asko Riikonen. For the game, Riikonen was 1 for 3 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Marquette a 5-3 lead.
"It feels good to get this one," Riikonen told the Marquette Bulletin.
At 2-0, the Miners have played well so far.
