Blue Sox Get Close Win Over Polar Bears
|
Getting a good performance from third baseman Justin Smelter, the Irving Blue Sox defeated the Billings Polar Bears, 6-4. Smelter went 2-2 with 2 doubles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3 for the Blue Sox. Irving reliever Jorge Villanueva was the winner. His record is now 5-4. The losing pitcher was Martín García. Matthew Fallows got the save, the 19th for him this season.
Smelter had a game-changing double in the top of the ninth. On a 1-1 fastball from Martín García, he banged a run-scoring double to right-center, giving the Blue Sox a 5-4 lead. It was the 5th double of the year for Smelter.
"We put it together today and came out with the win," Smelter said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
The Blue Sox are now 53-49, while the Polar Bears fall to 54-48.
