The Hammond Herons topped the Provo Mango, 2-1, in USSL Single A action at Mango Yard. The player of the game was Hammond pitcher and Palm River-Clair Mel, Florida native Howard Brisbin. Brisbin went 6.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. His record improves to 1-0. Curt Wright locked down his 4th save.
Tied up with the Mango in the top of the fourth inning, the Herons got a boost from left fielder Stuart Janssen. With a runner on 2nd, Janssen saw a 3-1 fastball from Dennis Blanchard and hit a 2-run home run to break the stalemate and put Hammond on top, 2-0.
"We take it day by day here," said Janssen, "and today was a good one for us."
The Mango, now 10-8, continue their slow start.
