The Atlanta Smoke beat the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids, 4-3, at Smoke Ballpark. The win was largely due to the efforts of left fielder Valentín Guzmán, who captured player of the game honors. He was 2-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Calvin Beck got the win, improving to 6-11. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 9 and walking 3. Atlanta, at 41-48, occupies 6th place in the Premier League.
Guzmán had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the seventh. On a 1-1 fastball from Christian Mustard, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Smoke a 4-2 lead. It was the 26th home run of the year for Guzmán.
"Baseball is about momentum," said Guzmán, "and we feel we've got it in our favor after that win."
