Rainbow Mermaids Slip Past Phoenix, 5-4
|
Phoenix got a terrific performance from pitcher Juan Guillén, but it wasn't enough to beat the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids. Northern Virginia won the Chase Field contest, 5-4. Guillén was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. Northern Virginia, now 4-2, has gotten their season off to a good start.
Mike Strickland's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With one out, he rapped a fastball from Santiago Alonza for a 3-run home run. It put Northern Virginia in front, 5-4.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Strickland said.
