Northern Lions BC Fall Short, 5-4, at Portland
|
Portland played host to Thunder Bay at the friendly confines of Evergreen Park.
The Thunder Bay Northern Lions BC got a sterling performance from pitcher Stewart Fleming, but the Evergreens still prevailed, 5-4. Fleming was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. Roberto Calderón got the win, improving to 8-4. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 3.
The Evergreens got a lift from right fielder Shahid Afridi who had a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the first inning off Stewart Fleming. It was his 12th walk of the season and put Portland in front, 1-0.
"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Afridi.
Portland leads the Silver League by 10½ games.
