Northern Lions BC Fall Short, 9-8, at Portland
|
António Mendoza had a good game, but he could not keep the Thunder Bay Northern Lions BC from falling, 9-8, to the Portland Evergreens at Evergreen Park. The Thunder Bay right fielder went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3 in the loss. Giovanni Mireles was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. Kent Clement recorded the save for Portland, his 4th of the season.
Ramón Garmendia, who is tied for 10th in the SL with a .303 batting average, aided the Portland cause with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the shortstop drove in one run.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Garmendia told the Portland Citizen. "It's as simple as that."
Portland now sits at 22-12, while Thunder Bay falls to 13-21.
