Phoenix starter José Vélez had a strong outing against the Yellowknife Dragonblood at The Dragon Den. The left-hander was a big part of his team's 5-2 win. In 8 innings, Vélez surrendered 11 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs. Tim Yoder closed the game out for Phoenix, earning his 1st save.
Tied up with the Dragonblood in the top of the fourth inning, the Hotspur U-21 got a boost from second baseman Terry MacDonald. With runners on 1st and 2nd, MacDonald saw a 2-1 fastball from Forest Stanley and hit a run-scoring double to break the stalemate and put Phoenix on top, 3-2.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Vélez told a Phoenix News reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
Phoenix currently is in 9th place in the Premier A at 31-57.
