It was the game that pitchers dream about: the no-hitter.

It happened today at Tennille Grounds. Tony Alfonso of the Myrtle Beach Mermen was right on target against the Asheville Highlanders in a 9-0 victory. Alfonso zeroed in on them, holding them hitless with 11 strikeouts and 5 walks.

"I just had it all today," Alfonso told BNN reporters after the game. "Very good stuff and great location. That is a combination that's hard to beat."

So far this year Alfonso has made 20 starts, tossed 140.1 innings, struck out 136 batters and walked 68. His record is 10-6 with a 3.91 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .242 batting average.
