Fur Traders Edge Asheville in Pitching Duel
|
Fernando Varela pitched well, but the Asheville Highlanders still lost the game, falling 1-0 to the Tacoma Fur Traders at Asheville Park. Daniel Ryan closed the game out for Tacoma, earning his 10th save. The Highlanders, now 10-21, have lost 4 in a row.
The Fur Traders got a big at-bat from designated hitter Stan Wheeler. For the game, Wheeler went 1 for 3. In the top of the fourth, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 6th hit of the season gave Tacoma a 1-0 lead.
"Some of the guys in here work pretty hard, some of the guys just kind of fall out of bed and get it done. Whatever works I guess, we won this one," Wheeler told the Tacoma Bulletin.
