The Myrtle Beach Mermen dealt the Phoenix Hotspur Youth a 6-5 loss at Tennille Grounds. David Meléndez was the star on offense. He was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Jeff Merritt got the win, improving to 2-0. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 3. Kelemeneke Balun picked up the save, his 2nd.

Meléndez had a game-changing double in the bottom of the sixth. On a 0-1 curveball from Jorge Cruzan, he banged a 2-run double to left-center, giving the Mermen a 5-3 lead. It was the 3rd double of the year for Meléndez.

"We take it day by day here," said Meléndez, "and today was a good one for us."

The win takes Myrtle Beach to 9-7.
