Pérez has 4 hit day as Screaming Eagles Squeeze Past Asheville
|
The Mercer Island Screaming Eagles beat the Asheville Highlanders, 6-5, at Asheville Park. The win was largely due to the efforts of second baseman Jorge Pérez, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4-5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4. Mercer Island reliever Nésto Gago picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Jesús Martínez shouldered the loss. Mercer Island, now 2-1, has gotten their season off to a good start.
Pérez contributed a big hit, a grand slam home run, for Mercer Island in the top of the ninth. With his team trailing 5-2, Pérez took a fastball from Jesús Martínez and stroked the home run to right. His 1st home run of the season allowed the Screaming Eagles to leap in front, 6-5.
"It feels good to get that win," said Pérez. "Now it's on to the next one."
