Polar Bears Come Back Late to Top Grasshoppers

De John Cleland pitched well enough to win, but it was not to be. The San Bernardino Grasshoppers, despite Cleland's fine outing, dropped a 3-1 decision to the Billings Polar Bears at Field of the Grasshoppers. Billings reliever Roberto Roque picked up the win to move to 1-0. De John Cleland suffered the loss. Billings is now 32-37, San Bernardino 30-39.
Had José Cruz not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Cruz hit a 2-run double. That made the score 3-1, in favor of the Polar Bears.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Billings skipper Todd England.
