Phoenix left-hander Neal Burns made an effective start against the Columbia River Rats at Columbia Stadium, leading his team to a 5-2 win. Phoenix reliever Neal Burns was credited with the win, to go to 1-0. Bob Grzelak took the loss for Columbia. Phoenix is now 13-18, Columbia 19-12.

The most critical at-bat came in the top of the 17th inning. With two out, Juan Negrete hit a full count fastball from Bob Grzelak for a 3-run home run. It put Phoenix in front, 5-2.

"Our team showed some spunk," said Negrete.
