The Asheville Highlanders beat the Mercer Island Screaming Eagles, 5-4, at Mercer Island Grounds. The win was largely due to the efforts of second baseman Marcos Rico, who captured player of the game honors. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. The winner was José Fuentes in relief. His record improves to 4-2. Armando Garay took the loss. Asheville is now 39-49, Mercer Island 52-36.

Don Leach's hit in the top of the tenth was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a curveball from Armando Garay for a run-scoring single. It put Asheville in front, 5-4.

"This was a good win," said Rico.
