Asheville Highlanders starter Fernando Varela was in fine form against the Myrtle Beach Mermen at Asheville Park, leading his team to a 4-2 win. Asheville is now 17-25.
With no one out in the bottom of the fifth, Marshall Attwood stroked a go-ahead 2-run single. It was his 36th hit of the season and put Asheville in front, 2-0.
