Rails Continue Skid Thanks to Xhaka, Screaming Eagles
|
The Mercer Island Screaming Eagles defeated the Richland Rails, 8-4. Earning player of the game honors was catcher Martinus Xhaka, who went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 7 RBI and scoring twice. Mercer Island reliever Luis Ochoa picked up the win, upping his record to 2-2. Barney Starr shouldered the loss. The defending champion Screaming Eagles have struggled a bit to find their groove this season, but improve to 6-6 with the win.
Xhaka had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a first pitch fastball from Matt Crowley, he banged a grand slam home run to left, giving the Screaming Eagles a 8-4 lead. It was the 2nd home run of the year for Xhaka.
"We came out aggressive," said Screaming Eagles manager Jared Gilbert. "We came out swinging the bats."
