Big Day for Joysey: Swats 5 Hits
|
5 hits in a game has always been a magic number in baseball. Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory, your fifteen minutes of fame -- you get your name in the record book. Win or lose, you get listed. Arlen Joysey got his name in the record book, but the Richardson City Thundercats picked up the win, topping the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids 9-8. "Sure, I would have much preferred to win the game, but that's not how it came out. In baseball you win some, lose some and some get rained out," the Northern Virginia catcher expressed his feelings during the postgame press conference. He certainly did his part today, pounding out hit after hit.
Later in the clubhouse Joysey spoke further about his big game. "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime day. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone." On his record-setting day Joysey delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day that will be good scrapbook material. Arlen Joysey singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Cordell Wilson in the 5th, hit a three-run home run off Manuel Franco in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
Posting a .308 batting average to date, Joysey has 5 home runs and 19 RBIs.
