Victory Over Shooters Takes Marquette to 47-27
|
Fans who came to Marquette Stadium watched the Marquette Miners and the Springfield Shooters fight to the finish.
The Marquette Miners did just enough to secure a 5-3 victory over the Springfield Shooters at Marquette Stadium. Nobody did more than pitcher Enrique Castro, who captured player of the game honors. Castro, now 12-4, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 9, walking 3, and allowing 3 earned runs. Félix Santiago nailed down his 16th save.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Miners sent teenager Edgar Balerio to the plate against Shooters hurler Jorge Otero. With runners on 1st and 2nd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 1-0 fastball to score 1.
"Enrique is tough when he's hitting his spots," said Marquette manager .
Marquette now sits in second place in the Menard's AA at 47-27.
