Grasshoppers Win, Hope to Turn around Slow Start
|
The San Bernardino Grasshoppers knocked off the Atlantic City Sonics, 5-4, at Field of the Grasshoppers. Orlando Velásquez, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason San Bernardino won. The shortstop was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Júlio Peña picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Osvaldo Garibe was tagged with the loss. Héctor Valentín closed the door for San Bernardino, picking up his 2nd save of the year.
Chris Costa's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth was significant for the Grasshoppers. Coming to the plate with a runner on 2nd and San Bernardino leading 4-3, the third baseman hit a run-scoring single.
In comments to the San Bernardino Observer, Velásquez admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
Losses have been few and far between for the Sonics, who are now 6-2.
