Big Day by Mathes Ignites Evergreens Win
|
The Portland Evergreens defeated the Houston 1837 BBC, 6-0, in Third League action at Evergreen Park. Charles Mathes received player of the game honors. The 8-year veteran went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 5. Portland reliever Fernando Ramírez picked up the win, upping his record to 3-2. Alexis Zambaco was saddled with the loss. The third-place Evergreens lifted their record to 29-16.
Portland took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Mathes hit a 2-run double. His 3rd double made the score 2-0, Portland.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Mathes said.
