Panama City Piranhas starter John Dempsey turned in a sterling performance against the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids, leading his team to a slim 2-1 win. Dempsey went 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 0, and struck out 8. His record improves to 4-4. Anderson O'Mara was called on to finish, recording his 15th save.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Juan Jose Ayala came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Northern Virginia pitcher Lou Hartling, he hit a 2-1 changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Panama City on top, 2-1.
Dempsey said he was "thrilled" the fans had something to get excited about.
Panama City is 32-19 and Northern Virginia, with the loss, 27-24.
